PACEAA is a project under the European Commission’s COOPENER programme,  implemented by the UNEP Risø Centre with partners IED based in France, along with AFREPREN/FWD and the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA), both based in Kenya. The project addresses the issue of rural electrification as a means of alleviating poverty, in particular using electricity from agro-industries.

The three-year PACEAA project works together with two larger initiatives funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and co-implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the African Development Bank:

  • Greening the Tea Industry in East Africa (GTIEA) supporting the development of small hydropower for tea factories as a substitute for expensive and unreliable electricity from the grid and diesel backup power. The project is executed by the East Africa Tea Trade Association (EATTA), based in Mombasa, Kenya.

  • Cogen for Africa is helping to transform the market for cogeneration in Eastern and Southern Africa by strengthening the capacity of cogeneration project developers, technical service providers, and local manufacturers to deliver profitable cogeneration projects, principally from sugar cane bagasse. The project is executed by AFREPREN/FWD, based in Nairobi, Kenya.
